Israeli government have accused Shakir, a US citizen, of supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) motion in opposition to Israel's military occupation of the West bank and constructing of illegal Jewish settlements on Palestinian land.

Human Rights Watch has accused the Israeli judiciary of the use of a 2017 law banning entry to foreigners who aid BDS with a purpose to quell complaint of the country's regulations closer to Palestinians. 

"Israel portrays itself as the area's best democracy, but is set to deport a rights defender of his non violent advocacy," said Tom Porteous, the watchdog's deputy application director. "Israeli government ought to attention on ending their serious human rights abuses as opposed to muzzling groups reporting on them."
